At United Steppers, we teach students to dance by feeling the music. Using the 4-count number system, every dancer begins with the Basic Walk, the foundation of Detroit Club Style Ballroom. From there, students progress through three levels of instruction.
Students build rhythm awareness and learn the Basic Walk. Women start on the right foot, while men focus on timing and control.
The most critical phase. Women refine turns and movement control, while men practice leading, timing, and basic turns. Both learn to connect more deeply with the music.
Dancers develop creativity, style, and confidence with partners. Focus is placed on leading, following, combinations, and flow, with encouragement to create a personal style.
Students are also taught floor etiquette: respect space, maintain lane control, and approach the dance floor with confidence. Advancement is based on practice and demonstrated skill, not speed.
Ballroom music includes everything from R&B and contemporary jazz (Gerald Levert, Janet Jackson, Marion Meadows) to timeless classics like The Whispers and The Dramatics. The variety keeps dancers inspired and connected to rhythm.
Learning Philosophy
Dance with confidence and have fun.
Women: follow naturally and keep the beat.
Men: lead creatively and practice both hands.
Everyone: respect your partner, stay in your lane, and enjoy the music.
Detroit Ballroom blends grace, rhythm, and connection — a true art form where tradition meets personal style.
